The European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) today donated €10,000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to contribute to efforts to assist people affected by the conflict in Ukraine. The donation was made following an appeal from the ICRC and the International Federation of Red
Cross on 1 March for 250 million Swiss francs to respond to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian condition unfolding in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.
Prof. Maria Pia Amato, President of ECTRIMS, made the following statement:
“The ECTRIMS Executive Committee is deeply concerned over escalating armed hostilities in Ukraine and the loss of life and human suffering of Ukrainian citizens. We join calls by the
international community for an immediate halt to bloodshed and violence. As an independent organisation that prides itself on neutrality in the international research community, our donation to the ICRC reflects our solidarity with the medical community in providing the best care to all people affected and displaced by conflict and war. We issue this statement in the hopes that all parties may seek a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law. ”
ECTRIMS encourages the scientific community to assist in humanitarian relief efforts through further donations directly to the ICRC or to alternative donation centres in your local country.
